# Delete a Category

Sometimes categories outlive their usefulness.

Maybe you've reorganized your Knowledge Base structure. Or you accidentally created a duplicate. Whatever the reason, deleting unwanted categories keeps your content tidy and your navigation clean.

Only empty categories can be deleted. If your category contains articles or [subcategories](/article/cyyjJILZjs-creating-subcategories) you'll need to move or delete them first. You can reassign articles with the [bulk edit](/article/jyd570o8vo-bulk-edit-status-author-and-stale-status-for-multiple-articles) tool ⚡

1. Head to **Content** (or [open the Content page](https://my.helpdocs.io/app/content))
2. Click ![](https://files.helpdocs.io/Ytt2uahFxY/articles/fm08r6h25k/1785677886484/three-lines-icon.svg) **More** on the category
3. Hit **Delete category**, then **Confirm delete**

Once deleted the category cannot be recovered. Any category URLs will return a 404 error.
